CPR Changes Made Easy

Implementation Guide for Aquatic Facilities

In 2006, new standards are being introduced for CPR in Canada and throughout the rest of the world.  As one of the five Canadian Standard Setters for CPR and First Aid, the Lifesaving Society will be the first national organization in Newfoundland and Labrador to fully implement the CPR standards within our programs and course materials!

Starting with this Implementation Guide, the Lifesaving Society will provide our members with user friendly, leading edge information and resources from the latest international research into CPR and First Aid to help you introduce and manage these changes.

A simple, flexible and user friendly self-study update has been developed to prepare Lifesaving Society Leadership Volunteers in the performance, instruction and evaluation of the new CPR skills.  There is no need to attend a clinic.

How do these CPR changes impact my facility?

CPR changes will affect the following:

·                     Lifesaving Society Leadership Volunteers (Instructors & Instructor Trainers)

·                     Lifesaving Society program content and course materials

                        ·                     Facility emergency procedures

Questions, questions, questions. . .

Do I need to attend a clinic?
No.  The changes are simple and can be integrated easily into routine in-service training updates for instructors and lifeguards

When do I start teaching the new protocols?
September 1, 2006   Consult your employer.  Lifesaving Society instructors and lifeguards should change thier teaching, evaluation or performance or resuscitation skills only when their employers have implemented the new protocols. Many are implementing this fall.  Everyone should be using the new protocols before the summer of 2007.

When do examiners start evaluating the new protocols?
Through the transition phase, examiners evaluate candidates according to the protocols they were taught.  Under no circumstances should candidates for Lifesaving Society awards taught under the current standards be penalized because they do not perform the revised protocols.

When will the revised literature be available?
The Society is releasing the revised literate over the summer, including the Canadian Lifesaving Manual, Canadian First Aid Manual and all award guides.

Instructors can update their own copies of the old literature using the special download of the Award Guide Insert.  You can also view/download the updated Test Item Must Sees at the same time.  Affiliate Members and instructors can use the special insert and updated Test Item Must Sees to introduce the new resuscitation standards to staff during in-service training.

Look for the words 'With the 2005 CPR Guidlines' on the cover of the revised Canadian First Aid Manual coming out this summer.

Leadership Volunteers Update Process

Lifesaving Society courses and recertifications beginning after September 1, 2006 will be taught and evaluated using the new CPR content and standards.  Beginning immediately, Leadership Volunteers affected by the CPR changes can download the 2006 CPR and Leadership update in preparation for implementing new CPR and resuscitation skills to Lifesaving Society programs.

This self-study update does not require attendance at a clinic.  However, it is the responsibility of each Instructor to inform the Lifesaving Society that they have dowloaded the material and read it.   You must download the Update Confirmation form and fax it to the branch office before September 1, 2006.  Only after the branch office receives your confirmation form, will your file be updated.

The following Leadership Volunteers will be affected by the CPR changes:

Let each staff member order the update directly from the Society (see CPR Update Confirmation form).  Be sure to verify that the Leadership Volunteer has the updated materials before they teach Lifesaving Society programs at your facility.

Text Box: Value Added Inservice Training
An inservice is a great way for your staff to get the training and practice in the event of an emergency. Take this opportunity and recertify their Lifesaving CPR award (CPR skills can be examined by any Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving CPR Instructor or Lifesaving First Aid/AEC Instructor.)For courses beginning after September 1, 2006, the Society will ship these products with a supplement  until our current inventory is depleted.  Once the updated manuals are available, the supplements will be discontinued.  Rest assured, there will be no interruption to the way you delivery Lifesaving Society courses.

 Emergency Procedures & Inservice Training

Review your emergency procedures.  The new CPR standards can affect the way you deal with an emergency situation.  The standards may allow you to simplify your emergency procedures.

Although your staff’s current skills remain effective, training your staff in the new CPR standards will ensure that all responders are on the same page should an emergency arise.  The inservice is a great update for your instructors, lifeguards and any other staff including cashiers.

Some Leadership Volunteers may prefer to attend an in-person session.  This is an opportunity for you to accommodate those instructors and market an inservice for instructors not working in your facility.

The 2006 CPR & Leadership Update package contains all the resources you need to revise your facility’s emergency procedures as well as a simple lesson plan for inservicing all of your emergency response staff.  It can be delivered by a Lifesaving Society Instructor or other designated staff member such as a Head Lifeguard.
