Boating Safety

The importance of an organized snowmobile education program is highlighted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism and Recreation Strategy which states:

"An annual average of 7.5 deaths related to snowmobiling were reported in the 1990-1994 period; the death rate (number of deaths/total population) is 60% more than in New Brunswick, 310% more than in Ontario, and 340% more than in Quebec."

This education program is the first and only one of its kind in the province, and according to the statistics, it is long overdue.

  • BE SLEDSMART AND AVOID ICE-RELATED SNOWMOBILING RISK FACTORS

    1. Always ride sober. Never drink and drive your snowmobile.
    2. Ride in daylight.
    3. Drive responsibly. Don't ride on ice when your visibility is impaired.
    4. Wear a buoyant snowmobile suit, to combat submersion and help protect against the numbing effects of hypothermia.
    5. Always ride with a buddy.

    THE SNOWMOBILE EDUCATION PROGRAM

There are two aspects to the program. Educate the public on safe snowmobiling practices and to train people in various communities to deliver the safe snowmobiling message. This has been accomplished through officers of all RCMP detachments throughout our province.

In support of this endeavour, education materials have been developed distributed to snowmobile dealers to all trainers as well as distribute with sales of snowmobiles.

An awareness campaign through various forms of media (radio, television, and newsprint) has been implemented and PSA's developed.

Snowmobiling on ice covered bodies of water - a safety video specific to the problems of snowmobiling on ocean ice has been developed to address the drowning problem in this province.
